a journal from home

Meet one of our store managers Kylie, who welcomes us into her isolation hangout: home with her two young boys. She shares what her little family have been up to over the last three weeks at home.

Getting Outdoors – We have been exploring our little neighbourhood on sunny days and are lucky enough to have a small beach around the corner that’s covered in shells. The boys will ride their bikes over and fill their pockets with a few “treasures” to bring home to our backyard. An outing of some sort always helps break up the day and creates a bit of routine that we all crave.

Connecting Digitally – Obviously our friends and family are at home during this time, so we’ve spent a lot of time on Skype and Zoom lately. My 8 year old has had a few classroom sessions on Zoom and has been able to chat with some school friends. He’s a really social kid, so technology has been so helpful for him to stay connected!

Reading – We’ve been spending a lot of time reading during this time. A large portion of my 8 year old’s “schooling” recently has been reading chapter books. We take turns reading together, and it’s always one of my favourite parts of the day. I’ve also gotten to read a good portion of the books on my nightstand that have been on my “to-read” list for quite some time.

Baking – I think most people have rediscovered a love of baking while at home! We’ve been making bread every few days, cookies (our favourite recipe is Alton Brown’s “The Chewy” chocolate chip!), and my 4 year old has loved figuring out what we’re having for morning tea. Both of my kids have also gotten more involved in helping prepare meals since we’ve obviously been cooking a lot more the last few weeks!

Slowing Down - We’ve been making the most of not having to rush out of the house in the mornings by cooking big breakfasts and sitting on the deck in the sun. One of the best pieces of advice I read recently was to try and keep a calm atmosphere at home as much as possible right now. Both of our kids know (to a certain extent) what is going on in the world right now, so it’s been important for us to create a calm, safe space for them at home. I hope they will remember some nice, small moments from this time when both of their parents were home with them.

Thank you so much for sharing with us Kylie, it is so lovely to see you and your little ones making the most of your time together. What have been your favourite things to do at home with your little ones? xx Nb
