a natural easter activity

a natural easter activity to share with your little ones

This natural activity is a lovely way for your little one to get creative by using their hands and to learn about colour. It can also be lots of fun guessing which food will create which colour!

First you need eggs. It can be hard to find white eggs these days (white eggs will make the dye colour stand out more compared to brownish eggs), try your local organic supermarket or farmers market and pick out the lightest eggs you can find.

The fun part, choosing your natural colour dyes:

Yellow: Stir 2 tablespoons of turmeric into 1 cup of boiling water, then add 2 teaspoons of white vinegar.

Red Orange: Take the skin of 6 yellow onions and simmer in 2 cups water for 15 minutes, then strain. Add 3 teaspoons of white vinegar.

Faint red orange: Stir 2 tablespoons of paprika into 1 cup boiling water, then add 2 teaspoons white vinegar.

Pink purple: Cut 1 medium beetroot into chunks and add to 4 cups boiling water. Stir in 2tablespoons of white vinegar and leave to cool; remove beetroots.

Dark blue purple: Peel the skin from 6 red onions and simmer in 2 cups water for 15 minutes, then strain. Add 3 teaspoons of white vinegar.

To dye the eggs we poured each dye into a jar which was then labeled. One egg (hard boiled) was then placed in each jar and left in the fridge over night.

In the morning we poured the eggs out and left to dry on paper. If you hate the idea of throwing away the dye after all that work, keep it in your jar and your little ones can use it to create water colour paintings - more creative fun, they will love and completely safe!

Enjoy your beautifully coloured eggs! Have a safe and Happy Easter. nb x
